"Inthe Illustrated London News observed the prevalence of the '"sensation" paragraphs' of modern crime reporting" (Sweet, p.5). The Illustrated London News captured the horror of the Great Famine in Ireland. King notes that English readers, particularly liberal MPs, were shocked by the images outlining "roofless hovels, deserted villages.
